Review of: “Toxic Parents”

Author: Susan Forward, Ph.D.

Review by: Angela Letzner, LPCC-S

Subtitled, “Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life”, the author breaks down the definition of toxic parents and provides a few checklists to help readers decide if their parents were toxic. The book is divided into two major sections: one about the types of toxic parents that exist, the next section helps in how to work through the emotional challenges of having grown up that way.

This book can be a challenging read to those who grew up with toxic parents and as the book encourages, is best read while working through talk therapy with a trained professional. It could help readers to feel less shame and understand that the pain experienced is a normal psychological response to being raised by toxic parents.

* self-help books can be beneficial in helping work through issues either on your own or in conjunction with therapy. If there are things books suggest that don’t work for you or you disagree with, it is recommended to just dismiss that content.
